Camiguin Hummer History

General Hummer History

The Hummer H1 was a civilian vehicle based on the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), popularly known as the Humvee, which was created by AM General. The vehicle was produced from 1992 through 2006.Originally released in the civilian market in 1992, the Hummer H1 owed its birth to the popularity of photos from Operation Desert Storm and the enthusiastic campaign from actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who personally owns several variants of Hummer vehicles. GM announced that 2006 would be the last model year for the Hummer H1, with production winding down in June 2006 due to a new emission law for Diesel engine vehicles which takes effect in 2007.

History of our Camiguin Hummer

Our Camiguin Hummer had been built in 2002 by "Road Runner" in Tagbilaran. Pinoys are well known crafts men and they are well well known for their copies. ;-) In 2002 a manager from Coca Cola ordered a Hummer. Fortunately the "Road Runners" had an original Humvee in their work shop, so they could copy directly from the real one and put an Isuzu C240 Diesel engine inside. Our Hummer got the typical Coca Cola red paint. At the same time they also built a "Baby Hummer". This one is not a true copy but a shorter and smaller Hummer-like car.

In 2005, Hampi, a Swiss expat and owner of the Alona Sunrise Snack in Panglao heard whispers about this Hummer. It was said that there stands a Hummer at the smoke test facility of the LTO in Tagbilaran. After many inquiries, Hampi found the owner and could buy the Hummer. The first job of the Hummer was to make advertisement for the Sunrise Snack restaurant on Alona Beach in Panglao. Very quickly the restaurant's customers asked for trips with the Hummer. More and more the restaurant business became secondary and the famous Hummer tours in Bohol were the main attraction. Hundreds of happy customers discovered the Loboc river, the Bohol Tarsiers and the Chocolate Hills with the Hummer. Hampi maintained the Hummer with much love and added many improvements like inbuilt shower, cooling boxes, sun roofs, tables and seats and many many more.

In 2007, Hampi gave the Hummer a new look. The trips sometimes get rough, so the Hummer's side panels were protected with Molave hard-wood and the red finish was replaced by a black heavy duty painting. In 2008 we discovered the Hummer in Panglao. Since then we had several Hummer-Trips with our guests who wanted to discover Bohol's nature. It has always been interesting and funny to drive cross-country with Hampi as driver and guide and Thata as hostess.

Early 2011 Hampi informed me that he will stop his Hummer Tours because he wasn't that young guy anymore. We did not hesitate and asked Hampi, if he would sell his Hummer to us. All, we got was a bright smile and a hearthful YES.

Since June 1, 2011 the famous Hampi-Hummer brings tourists in Camiguin to the most spectacular points of this little island born of fire.
